The Challenge

United by Blue is an apparel company and a mighty defender of the world’s waterways. For every purchase that is made, the company removes one pound of trash from waterways. In other words, they are legit saving the world.

For this class assignment, the challenge was to develop a mobile marketing plan for the company including an SMS program and a content and advertising strategy for social media. I also threw a VR implementation idea into the plan.

SMS Program

  • Set the goal to build a database of subscribers so that United by Blue could tap into the inherent strengths of SMS marketing including the ability to be timely with messaging, to build brand loyalty, and to optimize on the fly.

  • Set up the program to send 4 text messages a month with content ranging from mobile coupons, eco-volunteer opportunities, and exclusive early access to new clothing lines.

Social Media Strategy

  • Targeted Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook because the target market was between the ages of 18-44 and mostly female.

    • For Instagram: Developed posts that featured quotes from leading ocean conservationists superimposed over high-quality imagery of the world’s oceans.

    • For Pinterest: Created a mixture of content that was either infographics or featured pins of relevant merchandise.

    • For Facebook: Developed a mixture of organic posts including educational and brand-building content and highly targeted carousel ads through Facebook advertising.
